Allow us to introduce you to the fabulous and sensational Shish Boom Band! Four marvelous musicians have come together to form the Velvet Kittens' very own extraordinary house band! This band of vintage vibed goodness plays a wide variety of Swing, Blues and Cabaret styles providing the pulse behind the sassy & talented Kittens!
The Shish Boom Band has been created especially for the VK's newest burlesque extravaganza Sugar Moonlight: A Classic Burlesque Revue, featuring original costumes designed by Eric Sands exclusively for the Velvet Kittens! Not since the heyday of burlesque has Dallas had a weekly show. The VK are exceptionally thrilled to be the first to re-introduce the entertainment in a weekly form to the area every Thursday night!
Music covered by the band ranges from early Swing and Jump Blues inspired material to €˜Rat Pack' Jazz standards that evoke the quintessential martini-infused club shenanigans of the early 60's. Spanking new burlesque musical & dance numbers premiering in Sugar Moonlight include: The swingin' Hey Pachuco, a sultry Why Don't You Do Right, the blues'y Boom, Boom and more! Visit the band on their website at http://www.shishboomband.com/.
DFW, meet the Shish Boom Band:

(guitar & vocals)

VK creator /choreographer would like to give a special thanks to Daniel Totten (Sugar Moonlight musical director/sax player). Totten has provided great support to the Kittens, and when approached in 2008 to form a new original burlesque revue has provided much assistance in the creation & musical selections of Sugar Moonlight. Totten was also the musical director & sax player of Hyena's Red Light Burlesque Revue which premiered in 2005.

Tonight at Hyena's Comedy Club….Dante!
Posted by Jana Edele | Filed under News
Thursday night is free night at Hyena's new comedy club, located in Dallas' Mockingbird Station! Headliner this week is comedian Dante! Show dates March 5, 6 & 7. For more information about Hyena's & show times, please visit their website: http://www.hyenascomedynightclub.com/
Born Jay Dante Rusciolelli, DANTE is currently a cast member on Last Comic Standing. On Last Comic Standing, he received the Capital One / No Hassle Pass audience favorite award in the LA auditions and again at the Semi-finals, becoming one of only two comedians in the show’s history to receive back-to-back audience favorite awards; he even received the first standing ovation ever had during the show’s semis round! On the show he is represented in the story line as the cute stay at home dad. The Internet response to Dante has been the most positive out of everyone. By far the most talked about cast member on line.
Dante is one of the top headlining comedians in the United States, appearing on numerous television shows and in films, and appearing to sold-out crowds across the country, as well as making regular stops each year at U.S. military bases around the world, entertaining the troops in every branch of the Armed Forces. He has been honored as the recipient of several comedy awards, including the $10,000 grand prize on America’s Funniest People on ABC; he also still holds the record for winning the most comedy awards ever presented to a single comedian at the BET Comedy Awards. Dante was even the winner of Los Angeles “Funniest Black Comic in LA” award… we’re still not sure how he even qualified for that one!
Beginning his career in San Diego at the La Jolla Comedy Store, Dante has since made a name for himself as one of the few comedians working today who are able to cross over to any crowd and still be just as funny. He is the rare sort of performer who can perform at an urban comedy club, do another set in front of a Latino crowd later that evening, and then still bring down the house at a Beverly Hills country club benefit show after that, all in the same night… and he has!
While he travels across the country, as well as abroad, today Dante calls Los Angeles his home, where you can catch him regularly at The Comedy Store and the Laugh Factory. In his comedy journey, Dante has had the honor and pleasure of working with some of the greats in the entertainment business, including Richard Pryor, Robin Williams, Milton Berle, BB King, Santana & Macy Grey… as well as Weird Al Yankovich (who may or may not qualify as one of the “greats” – but he IS a heck of a lot of fun!).
As an actor, Dante has been in over 20 plays. He received 1 of only 2 scholarships for acting at USIU. The other scholarship went to Jamie Foxx. Dante also studied under Jeff Goldblum at Playhouse West. He's had many roles in films and on TV shows. He starred for 2 years on a sitcom called The Blackberry Inn on BET. It was their highest rated show ever. Dante was also the commercial spokesman for ICE LITE from Miller. And had a development deal with Sony/Tri-Star in ’95.
With his sold-out club shows & recent television appearances, as well as upcoming projects in the near future, Dante is one act that’s hard to miss!
Networking in Burlesque, DFW style
Posted by Jana Edele | Filed under News
Burlesque entertainment is popping up all over the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex! From solo performers, to group revue shows, burlesque is becoming quite in fashion!
VK creator/producer first began choreographing and performing burlesque in DFW five years ago, and has awaited the emergence of those finding their performance voice in burlesque to surface. And surface they have! From hip hop to storylines…dancing to stripping, there are plenty of diverse burlesque performances to see! A web search provides all the local talent available and a simple you tube search provides a taste of everyone's different styles.
For those new to burlesque, there's a yahoo group for Texas burlesque performers the Kittens were introduced to by a local burlesque artist:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/texasburlesque/
This is a fantastic way to get acquainted and network with area performers, producers, helpful hints, upcoming shows, as well as classes/workshops.
Excited to meet the new performers (and the ones we haven't had the pleasure of meeting yet!), the VK will be organizing a social event for area performers to meet, mingle, and mix in a fun, relaxing atmosphere. If you're new to burlesque, feel free to drop us a hello!
