What You Need to Know About Dance Class

As dancers, our bodies are our instruments, and it's part of our job to ensure the safety and longevity to maintain this instrument. As students, we entrust our instructors to guide us and ensure our safety so we may sustain the physical ability to continually enjoy dance.

Below are guidelines recommended when looking for adult dance classes:

~Find out the philosophy of the owner and studio. Is it to teach dance? Is it to teach dance technically correct? Is it to teach the enjoyment of dance? Is it to make a profit? Or is it a combination of elements? Ask, and then compare the philosophy with the way the business is operated, and see if you find the element that's important to you.

~Find out the level of training and accomplishments both the owner and teachers have attained. Take note of professional training and performance history. It is recommended to find teachers who have had both a performance and teaching career, with reputable references to accommodate their abilities.

~Teaching in itself is an acquired skill. A skilled teacher can communicate with a variety of students, at a variety of levels.

~It's extremely important a teacher is active in injury prevention. Incorrect usage of the body can lead to minor injuries that without notice or treatment can lead to major complications later in life.

~A reputable dance or fitness facility has the necessary flooring for any type of dance exercise. For dance studios, look for the use of a sprung or floating floor, as it absorbs shock and helps to ensure less chance of a spinal, ankle, knee, back, or leg injury.

~Find a studio in which the times and dates of classes are convenient and fit into your schedule. If you find a studio you like without accommodating times, make a request. Most studios will be happy to accommodate their students if there is desire for classes and the studio is able to attain additional student interest.

~Research the tuition and fees of the individual studio. Find a studio that fits into your budget. The average cost for most adults for one dance session generally equals out to $10 – $15 per class.
